The Burden of Tradition - How a German paints the Pope | Arts.21

Pope Benedict XVI hailed him as his Raphael: Michael Triegel was born in Erfurt in 1968, grew up in communist East Germany and is an atheist. But that didn't bother the Pope. He and many other people admire Triegel's old-master-like skills, which he acquired at the famous Leipzig School of Arts. ARTS.21 met the painter while he was setting up his first major exhibition in the eastern German city.
