Takesada Matsutani, Continuing the Gutai Spirit

© BLOUIN ARTINFO Takesada Matsutani by Dion Tan Published: February 26, 2013 Japanese painter Jiro Yoshihara founded the avant-garde Gutai group in 1954 and wrote the "Gutai Manifesto" two years later, declaring that Gutai Art does not change the material, but brings it to life. Despite the Japanese experimental art movement's dissolution after Yoshihara’s death in 1972, the philosophy established by him continues to live on. As a Gutai member since 1963, Takesada Matsutani embraces the group’s creative spirit in his first retrospect in the United States, “Gutai Spirit Forever.”
