Joana Vasconcelos From Past to Future
Lisbon-based Joana Vasconcelos is an art star on the rise. Through her knitted and crocheted medallions, she weaves femininity and ties past to future. Considered the most successful Portuguese artist internationally, Vasconcelos was chosen to represent her home country at the 55th International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennale. “Trafaria Praia” is staged on a Lisbon ferryboat, which will make daily tours of the Canale di San Marco until November. The artist's largest solo exhibition to date is currently on display Lisbon’s Palácio Nacional da Ajuda. The show, a reprise of her Palace of Versailles commission last summer, has attracted more than 100,000 visitors. Vasconcelos spoke with Blouin ARTINFO about her work before heading to Venice.
